The Sculpture of Don Quijote and Sancho Panza
The sculpture is about five times life size. It is a bronze cast sculpture on a low pedestal at the foot of a massive stone monument with Cervantes above pondering his creations. Don Quijote and Sancho Panza are astride their horse and donkey with their armour, swords, lance, shield and packs.

The Drawings
The project of 21 drawings spanned over a year and included my reading/ rereading the two volumes of "Don Quijote de la Mancha" in a bilingual French-Spanish edition.The titles of each drawing are quotations from the book , either from from the thoughts of the characters or from the diologue between them. This series uses the work of Cervantes and Lorenzo Coullot Valera.

The drawings are done in pencil, india ink, stick pen and wash on heavy rag paper

As a child I knew the character of Don Quixote from illustrations and from reading some of the stories in the book. I tried to understand why a grownup was pretending. I liked to pretend and wear costumes, the idea of an adult doing it because he was driven by his insanity was tragic to me.

Later when I began to understand the intent of the book, the characters became more and more compelling, I enjoyed how they were interpreted in art and illustration. This character, initially tragic for me, began to gather dimension, at times heroic, compassionate and determined

Guided by his own moral compass, no matter how ridiculous it appeared, Don Quixote is an incredibly poignant figure and at the same time full of courage and presence.

In Madrid what struck me about the sculpture by Coullot Valera was the scale of the figures, about five times larger than life size, with the weight and gravitas of public sculpture commemorating wars and tragedies. I found it quite moving and the memory of the sculpture stayed with me.

When I returned to Madrid six years later I went to see the piece again and explored it more in depth. I took photos from a variety of angles for my own record keeping . These photos became the source images for the drawings I wanted to make.
